Chapter 1

Wanted

Charlotte was alone and afraid. Afraid that no one would want her, as she sat on the floor in her cage at the dog pound. She did not want to spend even one more night shivering on the cold floor. There were a few other dogs there, but they scared her and they definitely did not want to be friends. It was about closing time when the door opened. Her nose was filled with the most incredible scent. It’s been so long since she smelled anything but a wet musty kennel. Yes, she knew that scent, it was candy cane! Just then a little girl came rushing in and stopped… “Gracie slow down.” Her mother called still talking to the old man outside. “Hey girl,” Gracie said, as she put her hand through the bars holding out a piece of peppermint candy cane. “You sure are a pretty girl, come on don’t be afraid.” She spoke with a soft soothing voice. Charlotte slowly came close but not too close. Just enough to start to lick the candy the girl held out for her. “Hey, that tickles” Gracie giggled as she withdrew her hand back into her pocket. “What’s your name girl?” Gracie asked while inspecting her furry neck. She saw a tag but she could barely make out the letters. Charlo was what it read. “Oh I know it must be Charlotte” Gracie smiled. “Mom, please…
